Ψ The St. John's General Science Laboratory

The purpose of this website is to begin to define a project, a General Science Laboratory, that would conduct cutting edge research in multi disciplinary marine ecology using General System Theory for Caneel Bay, St. Johns, Virgin Islands.

History of Caneel Bay

"A Dutchman from the island of Statia, Peter Durloe was one of these original planters. His first claim was what is now called Cinnamon Bay, which he named for the many cinnamon trees, (bay rum) found there. Of course, being Dutch he used the Dutch word for "cinnamon" which is "caneel."

Thus, the first Caneel Bay was actually Cinnamon Bay."

History: Laurance Rockefeller

"In 1952, while on a Caribbean sailing trip, Laurance Rockefeller "discovered" beautiful St. John in the United States Virgin Islands. The island at that time had a population of less-than 400, and 85 percent of the topography was untouched jungle. Concerned for the future of this tiny, beautiful place in an era of rapid tourism development, Rockefeller came up with a plan.

First, he purchased huge portions of the island, beginning with the old Caneel Bay plantation. In 1955, he began developing the island’s infrastructure, bringing power, fresh water and roads. Next, he set about creating a whole new type of resort at Caneel Bay -- a small, luxury-camping site designed to have a low-impact on the environment.

After overseeing every detail of Caneel Bay’s creation, he donated the property to The Jackson Hole Preserve, a non-profit, conservation-oriented foundation supported by the Rockefeller family. The preserve later donated 5,000 acres surrounding the property to the federal government, opening the way for the creation of the huge St. John National Park. In 1993, management of Caneel Bay was taken over by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, which is committed to upholding Rockefeller’s original vision. In fact, Rockefeller’s original cottage (number 7) is the resort’s most sought after and stands as a tribute to the environmental visionary.

Encouraged by his success, Rockefeller repeated his feat on Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands. There, in 1964, he created an eco-sensitive resort at Little Dix Bay and assisted in the creation of the Gorda Peak National Park nearby. In the years since, Caneel Bay and Little Dix Bay have remained true to Rockefeller’s vision of a vacation hideaway where conservation took priority. Both hotels are managed by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and the company has taken great pains to preserve their environmentally sensitive nature."

History: Rockresorts:

"Through his resort management company, Rockresorts, Inc., Rockefeller opened environmentally focused hotels at Caneel Bay on Saint John, United States Virgin Islands (1956) (a favorite resort today for celebrities), some property of which was later turned over to the Virgin Islands National Park; in Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, and Hawaii, contributing to the movement now known as eco-tourism. The last of these, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, was established in 1965 on the Kohala Coast of the island of Hawaii."

Ecological Conceptual Map:

Ecological concerns can be seen as elements in the overall study of health (ie: medicine) where the following conceptual map shows how that logic can be seen.

Support:

"The Rockefeller Foundation was established in 1913 by John D. Rockefeller, Sr., to "promote the well-being" of humanity by addressing the root causes of serious problems. The Foundation works around the world to expand opportunities for poor or vulnerable people and to help ensure that globalization’s benefits are more widely shared. With assets of more than $3.5 billion, it is one of the few institutions to conduct such work both within the United States and internationally.

As John D. Rockefeller said,

“The best philanthropy is constantly in search of the finalities—a search for a cause, an attempt to cure evils at their source.”
